Interview with BC Hockey Now Not many coaches could look at a 5 win record and be happy and Quesnel Millionaires coach Brian Kozak is no different. But Kozak, in his first full season as the Millionaires’ head coach and general manager, feels his team is better than its 5-27-2-4 record as of Jan. 5 suggests. “We are not a five win team but we are, that’s the reality of it,” said Kozak, 39 and a Centennial Cup winner as a player with the Richmond Sockeyes’ under coach Orland Kurtenbach. “We try to teach our players life lessons and I tell them sometimes things get tough. It’s a life lesson. You face adversity. How do you face it? They are facing it head on.” While the Millionaires’ record tells one story the closeness of many of their losses over the past two months tells a different one. Since a 3-2 loss to Salmon Arm on Oct. 27, the Millionaires have suffered eight of its 12 losses by one or two goals. Two of those losses have come in overtime and they have also tied two games. Still there is no hiding from what has been a year of struggles for the Millionaires. “Obviously it has been a tough year by our record,” said Kozak. “We had a real tough start especially with what we had left over from last year. But since mid-October we have played some great hockey.” With the BCHL trade deadline set for January 10, the Millionaires lineup, as well as many around the league, could be much different as teams look to either load up for the playoffs or build for the future. Although Quesnel has not been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs it would take a minor miracle for the club to make the post-season. That means the trade deadline is another opportunity to keep rebuilding for Kozak. “I only have two players left from last year,” he said. “We have been rebuilding all along. We have a plan and our plan is to bring good young players here that want to play the game and mix them in with some good veterans who have heart who want to go to college or to the WHL.” Part of Kozak’s plan includes dealing for players who may be stuck on a big market team’s third line and give them big ice time on the power play and penalty kill or bring in a good young player who may move on to the WHL after one or two seasons. “That’s an avenue we are looking at,” said Kozak. “Quesnel brought in (Gilbert) Brule as a 15-year-old and they knew they only had him for one year, but what a year it was. It’s a different tier (recruiting to Quesnel). Instead of complaining we are being proactive.” So far this year Kozak has dealt for Teddy Vickers from Chilliwack who recently signed with Amherst University as well as Joel Leonard from Vernon who is also drawing scholarship consideration. The two are examples of players who have enjoyed playing in Quesnel, a small town that is passionate about its hockey. But with an aging building that needs to be replaced it’s a battle in itself attracting players against teams that have new buildings like Vernon or Salmon Arm. “You have to get them young and treat them well and keep them here,” said Kozak, who could have as many as 17 players back in next year’s lineup. “This town deserves a winner. I know the rink used to be just hopping. It’s something that I want to get here. We have our game plan and hopefully next year is better and the year after is better.” Mills Lose The Quesnel Millionaires played against the Salmon Arm Silverbacks on February 4.
